We placed a real lighted Christmas tree in the
community center for The Senior Citizens December meeting. Now, it
has to be an artificial
one.
-
The Civic Association paid Cheryl Cottone to
paint the new Hobart Gate way signs that they had arranged to be
placed at each entrance to the village.
-
The group also paid for half the cost for a
professional landscaper to plant a "garden" in front of each sign.
-
We donated money for Charlie Reinshagen's
retirement party and for Cheryl Cottones' memorial.
-
Joining with Marge VanValkenburg, we arranged for
a memorial fir tree to be planted on the corner of Maple Avenue and
Main Street in memory of Roger VanValkenburgh. Each December, we
would decorate it with Christmas lights. Dr. Bill Adams has now
taken over this task.
-
We join with the Rotary Club for the school
children's Christmas party at South Kortright Central School. The
Rotary provides the gifts and we provide the entertainment and
refreshments.
-
Together with the Fire Department} we purchased
the outdoor sign board located at the head of Cornell Avenue which
any group in the Village may use to promote their events.
-
We had made and placed the Bulletin Board outside
of the Post Office door for any notice that people or persons want
to announce to the public.
-
We donated the benches in the park behind the
fire house.
-
We gave John Mahoney money for supplies for the
new Bookstores sign on the gateway signs.
-
We do the window decorations in the store windows
for Halloween and Christmas.
-
We provide expenses for the Hobart Holler when it
is published.
-
We give the following Scholarships each year.
-
To the senior at SKCS who deserves
recognition but is not receiving any other prize. We leave this
decision to the Guidance Department.
-
We give several scholarships to the summer
recreation program for children who would not otherwise be able
to attend.
-
We have also occasionally given scholarships
to the 4-H camp Shankitunk.
-
We participate in the Music and Dessert held each
year, providing dessert and in return receive a portion of the gate
receipts.
-
We gave money for the new bookcases located in
the library at Reach.
-
We gave money and personnel to help with the new
playground behind Reach.
-
We have sponsored several "Meet The Candidates"
nights, both on the Town level and the Village level.
-
For several years, if there is enough snow to
hold the "Poker Run", we provide coffee, cocoa and soup for the
snowmobilers, as the trail is
beside the community hall. The next time the event happens, it is
expected that Hobart will be a registration point. Last winter we
even had participants from as far away as Oregon.

Our big project for the year is the Horseshoe
Festival in July. This date is planned to coincide with the SKCS
Alumni reunion which is always held on the fourth Saturday in July.
This gives the returning alumni something to do during the day. We
do advertising, placing the horseshoe signs, getting vendors and
sponsors and provide prize money for the top three teams. For the
last two years, we have had 25 teams playing (50 persons) with at
least 5 plus persons coming from New York City and Long Island area.
This year, the players asked that before next years event, that we
redo the pits, which have been in place for about the last nine
years. If we provide the materials, the men will provide the
manpower and knowhow.
